In 2001, the Mathare Youth Sports Association became the very first Laureus supported project.
At the Awards itself, Cathy Freeman won the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, and would later become a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy. The French football team won their first Team of the Year award, following their victory at Euro 2000.
